100 Word Stories – “…what does it taste like…”

by limebirdwriters

Merry Friday one and all! As always, the Limebird Writers take part in the 100 Word Challenges, set  by Julias Place. This week the prompt is …what does it taste like… If you want to do your own 100 story, then scroll down to the bottom for more information. 🙂

100 word challenge

This week we have one lone Limebird taking part, the awesome Limebird Vanessa. Enjoy! LimebirdVanessa

“Wow, it looks stunning!” said Jenny. “What does it taste like?” Her question was met with blank stares and sideways glances from the girls. Soon there was a snort, and a giggle, followed by howls of laughter. “What?” asked Jenny.

“My dear,” said Gillian. “As you’re new here, I will cut you some slack and explain – nobody cares.”

The others agreed. “Nobody,” they said.

“Think about it,” said Gillian. “When did you ever hear anybody say how delicious a wedding cake was? Never. It’s ALL about the look. Now, here’s the wood varnish, go and paint a second coat on those fondant flowers please.”

Would you like to have a go at a 100 word story? Well, head on over to Julia’s Place for the rules and either add your offering in the comments, or do your own post, but don’t forget to either link back to us or let us know in the comments so we can come and read!

  1. Oh gosh, I’m the only one this week! I didn’t feel very inspired by the prompt, but while I was thinking about it, a trailer came on TV for that programme Amazing Wedding Cakes, or whatever it’s called, so I thought “That’ll do!” hehe.

  2. Very creative Vanessa, wood varnish on the fondant! LOL that was great.

  3. Well you wrote a fun piece despite your lack of inspiration! And I think all that wonderful-looking frosting SHOULD taste divine! 🙂

  4. Hilarious! Love your entry!

Just jogged my memory of our “search” for a wedding cake baker for our wedding. After tasting several different bakers’ best efforts (we were getting married at a lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina), we were so determined to have our wedding cake taste good, we designed it: lemon cheesecake with mango puree on top, sided with a macadamia nut and coconut flake crust. Divine—and beautiful! Each piece included dark chocolate dipped strawberries and pineapple wedges. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.

    Screw the fondant! :o)

  5. Oh, such cynicism is the business of weddings! (That’s why I eloped. 😉 )

For being such a short story, I like naive Jenny and jaded Gillian; they seem very real, even in so few sentences. I also like the nameless repeating robots. I can picture a squad of be-tuxed sycophants echoing in unison! It’s almost Orwellian. 😀

    Nicely done, Vanessa!

  6. Awesome! This reminds me of my own wedding and what a fuss I made over the cake and how it looked–as well as tasted. At least we do get to taste the cakes before we spend hundreds of dollars on them. Some bakers even make a mini cake (serves 4) for you to take home as a free sample! Those are the bakers who don’t use the varnish, I imagine.

    • Yes, thankfully some people still care about what they taste like, but I think we’ve all experienced seeing an absolutely beautiful cake, and then it tastes really bland and artificial, such a disappointment!

  7. Great job Vanessa! That was wonderful and funny. I definitely didn’t expect that for the ending!

  8. Loved the little flash fiction! I’ve never understood why some people get so excited about fondant — I’m more concerned that the cake taste good.

  9. Dang, Vanessa, you’ve been writing like crazy this week! And this, like your other stuff, is awesome.
