Welcome to the 11th edition of our weekly selection of writing competitions and opportunities.

We aim to cover a range of different types of writing opportunities and contests over the weeks, but do let us know if you have particular areas of writing interest that we haven’t covered, and we’ll see what we can do!

Opportunity type – Open call for anthology.
Theme – Stories with a sarcastic and bitter take on love and romance.
Word count – 4,000 to 10,000 words.
Organiser/publisher – Sirens Call Publications.
Reward – Royalty sharing.
Eligibility – not specified.
Deadline – December 31, 2013 (or until full).

Notes – The title of the anthology is “Flowers are Overrated.

Opportunity type – Poetry competition.
Theme – Nature.
Word count – Up to 40 lines per poem.
Organiser/publisher – The Rialto (a poetry magazine), and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
Reward – First prize £1000, see link for other prizes.
Eligibility – Open to international entries.
Deadline – September 30, 2013.

Notes – There is an entry fee of £6 for the first poem, £3 for any subsequent poems.

Opportunity type – Magazine open to freelance article submissions.
Theme – Parenting.
Wordcount – 1,000 to 2,500 words for articles, 100 to 500 words for departments.
Organiser/publisher – Parenting.
Reward – Variable, dependent on length, difficulty, experience.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – Ongoing.

Notes – All queries must be in writing.

Opportunity type – Monthly flash fiction contest.
Theme – Story must be SciFi, Fantasy or Horror, under a changing monthly theme (e.g. September is ‘Outsiders’, October is ‘Out of Time’).
Word count – 500 to 1,000 words.
Organiser/publisher – Kazka Press.
Reward – $10 plus publication on their website and in their monthly newsletter.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – 20th of each month.

Notes – They ask for 6 months exclusivity on ePublished stories.
