Welcome to the 15th edition of our weekly selection of writing competitions and opportunities.

Why not get yourself in the mood for Halloween next month by writing a bit of dark fiction? Have a look at the first one on this week’s list for more info.

Opportunity type – Open call for submissions for an anthology series.
Theme – Dark fiction (Horror, thriller, suspense, crime, sci-fi, bizarre).
Word count – 2,000 to 5,000 words .
Organiser/publisher – DarkFuse.
Reward – $50 on acceptance, plus 5% of sales from e-book, plus a copy of the limited hardcover edition.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – Ongoing; an anthology is published up to four times per year.

Opportunity type – Several opportunities at well-established magazine (stories, poems, features, pocket novels).
Theme – Not specified.
Word count – Varies.
Organiser/publisher – The People’s Friend magazine / DC Thomson & Co Ltd.
Reward – Varies.
Eligibility – Open to international submissions.
Deadline – Ongoing.

Notes – This magazine caters more to the older generation, and has a very particular style. Important to be familiar with the magazine and their guidelines before submitting. Think ‘traditional values’ rather than ‘edgy modern’.


Opportunity type – Award for short prose and independent books (includes self-published books).
Theme – Not specified, although there are several categories for the book entries, both fiction and non-fiction.
Word count – Prose: Less than 10,000 words. Books: Not specified.
Organiser/publisher – The Eric Hoffer Award.
Reward – $250 for best prose, $2,000 for best book. See website for other honors and awards.
Eligibility – International.
Deadline – Prose: March 31, 2014. Book: January 21, 2014.

Notes – The Eric Hoffer Award was established at the start of the century in memory of the American philosopher Eric Hoffer. Entries are made through nominations; you can nominate someone else’s work, or your own.


Opportunity type – Children’s book publisher accepting unsolicited manuscripts.
Theme – Fiction and non-fiction, from picture books to YA. For ages 4 and up.
Word count – Not specified.
Organiser/publisher – Holiday House Publishers.
Reward – Not specified.
Eligibility –  Not specified. They are based in New York City.
Deadline – Ongoing.

Notes – All submissions are to be posted hard copies. You may submit illustrations too if you wish, but don’t send original copies.

  3. I wish editors would list what they consider “published” to be. I’ve found that some consider blog posts as being published and some do not.
