Writing Competitions and Opportunities Digest – Edition 35

Welcome to the 35th Edition of our weekly writing competitions and opportunities digest. If you missed the last edition, you can see it here.

Today we have some sci-fi, fantasy, child and teen books, poetry and humour! And all with ongoing deadlines…


Opportunity type – Short story submissions for a magazine.
Theme – Science fiction and fantasy.
Word count – 1,000 to 8,000 words.
Organiser/publisher – Clarkesworld Magazine.
Reward – 10¢ per word for the first 4000 words, 6¢ for each word over 4000.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – Ongoing.

Notes – Their average response time for submissions is two days.


Opportunity type – Annual poetry contest.
Theme – No particular theme, all styles are permitted.
Word count – Between 10 and 39 lines long.
Organiser/publisher – Best New Poems.
Reward – At the end of the year, they will give 50% of the profit from sales on their site to the winner – they sell tshirts, mugs etc. (There is no fee to enter the contest).
Eligibility – Must be aged over 13.
Deadline – Ongoing over the year (or until they receive 350 qualifying poems).

Notes – The poems that qualify get featured on their website for 7 days and are judged by any visitors to the site to who want to give opinions on the poems. At the end of the year, they will pick the best poem by assessing which were the most popular while they were featured. Those who judge the poems are also entered into cash prize drawings.


Opportunity type – Publisher accepting submissions for children and young teens’ books.
Theme – They are especially interested in science-fiction and fantasy but not exclusively .
Organiser/publisher – Flame Lily Books.
Reward – Not specified.
Eligibility – Not specified (they are based in England).
Deadline – Ongoing.

Notes – They do not deal with agents, they only work directly with authors.


Opportunity type – Online magazine seeking humorous submissions (short stories, flash fiction, poetry).
Theme – Funny stuff!
Word count – Short stories max 5,000 words; flash fiction 100 to 1,500 words; poetry – short prose type.
Organiser/publisher – Untoward.
Reward – Publication on their online magazine (they cannot pay at this time).
Eligibility –  Not specified.
Deadline – Ongoing.

Notes – There’s an interesting voice to the way the site is written, check it out.

UPDATE: Apologies, it appears Untoward are currently closed to submissions, but they say they will open again soon, so keep an eye on the site if you’re interested in this one.

  2. Untoward seems to be closed to submissions?

    • Oh goodness, yes, my bad! I usually click through to check on these things before including them, but I think on this occasion I must have just read the submissions page and not clicked through to see if it works. Sorry about that! I’ll ask our Beth to add a note to that one. Thanks for flagging that up Terry.

        I think that at least one of my stories got placed because of your suggestion.
