Writing Competitions and Opportunities Digest – Edition 37

Welcome to the 37th Edition of our weekly writing competitions and opportunities digest. If you missed the last edition, you can see it here.

We aim to cover a range of writing competition and opportunity types, geared to a range of levels. If there are particular types of writing opportunities you are looking for though, please do let us know and we’ll see what we can find!

Are you ready to get creative? Let’s go…


Opportunity type – Submissions required for a quarterly literary journal (prose, creative non-fiction and poetry).
Theme – The object of our desire.
Word count – Short stories up to 3500 words, flash fiction any length, creative non-fiction up to 1500 words or less, and poetry unspecified.
Organiser/publisher – Haunted Waters Press.
Reward – Publication in their summer 2014 issue.
Eligibility – Aged over 18.
Deadline – May 25, 2014 (or until filled).

Notes – As always, it’s good to browse the site well, and look at a past issue to get a feel for their style.


Opportunity type – Short story competition.
Theme – Elves.
Word count – Up to 1,000 words.
Organiser/publisher – Legendary Post.
Reward – Mostly just the glory of winning, recognised by winners blog badges that winners can place on their own blog.
Eligibility – Any.
Deadline – March 31, 2014.

Notes – Note, they publish all entries on their site as they come in.


Opportunity type – Screenwriting contest.
Theme – Genres, subjects and characters are assigned in heat rounds after registering.
Word Count – Round one, 12 pages. If you are then selected to go through to round two, 8 pages. If you are selected to go through to the third and final round, 5 pages.
Organiser/publisher – NYC Midnight.
Reward – Not sure (Let us know if you work it out!). All entrants receive feedback on their work from the judges.
Eligibility – International.
Deadline – May 1, 2014.

Notes – As is usual with screenwriting contests, there are entry fees: $39 if you register by April 3, or $49 if you register by May 1. You can receive $5 off the entry fee if you post it on Facebook or Twitter.


Opportunity type – Book publisher open to unsolicited submissions.
Theme – Literary fiction (they also do crime and YA, but are not currently open to unsolicited submissions for those).
Word count – Send the first three chapters or 50 pages with your initial enquiry .
Organiser/publisher – Soho Press.
Reward – A publishing deal.
Eligibility –  Not specified (they are based in New York).
Deadline – Ongoing.

Notes – All submissions are by hard copy in the post.
