This week we take you on a journey from erotic romance to the future of humanity, and from the ultra-short story to one that tingles the spine. Curious? Read on…


Opportunity type – Publisher looking for erotic romance.
Theme – See website for guidelines on what they do and don’t want.
Word count – 15,000 to 40,000 words for novellas, 40,000 to 85,000 for full length.
Organiser/publisher – Amira Press.
Reward – 40% of cover price on e-book sales from their site, 30% of cover price from 3rd party sites, 8.5% of cover price on print book sales.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – Ongoing.

Opportunity type – Essay contest.
Theme – How should humanity steer the future?
Word count – Maximum 9 pages or 25,000 characters.
Organiser/publisher – FQXi Community.
Reward – First Prize (top ranked essay): US$10,000. Second Prize (ranks 2-3): US$5000 each. Third Prize (ranks 4-8): US$2000 each. Fourth Prize (ranks 9-18): US$1000 each. Judging Panel Discretionary Prize (at its discretion, the panel can decide to award up to 2 special commendation prizes for non-professional and/or non-academic entrants): US$1000.
Eligibility – Any.
Deadline – April 18, 2014.

Opportunity type – 10 word short story contest.
Theme – Any.
Word Count – 10 words.
Organiser/publisher – Gotham Writers.
Reward – Winner gets a free Gotham ten-week writing workshop, plus publication on the website.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – June 3, 2014.

Notes – If a title is included, it counts towards the 10 words.


Opportunity type – Short story competition.
Theme – Any, as long as it is spine tingling!
Word count – Preferably no more than 5,000 words (there is a little flexibility though).
Organiser/publisher – Spinetinglers.
Reward – 1st, £100. 2nd, £50. 3rd, £25. 4th, £25. 5th, £25 (or your currency equivalent). First place is also published in their anthology.
Eligibility –  International.
Deadline – Monthly, by the 15th of each month.

Notes – You need to be registered with the site to enter. There is no charge for registering or entering the competition.
