Welcome to the fourth edition of our weekly writing digest here at Limebird Writers. Each issue will feature a few writing competitions and opportunities that we have selected for you. Opportunity type – Short story competition in magazine.
Theme – Moving, inspiring or funny story based on a real life experience.
Word count – 500 words.
Organiser/publisher – Prima Magazine, part of Hearst Magazines.
Reward – £200 plus a year’s subscription to Prima.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – Ongoing regular competition.

Notes – There is very little information on the competition page itself, but general rules that apply to all their competitions can be found on the magazine’s terms and conditions page, here (scroll to section 8).

Opportunity type – A prize for an already published novel.
Theme – Any fiction.
Word count – Not specified.
Organiser/publisher – Bard College.
Reward – A prize of $30,000 and a one-semester appointment as writer-in-residence at Bard College. The recipient must give at least one public lecture and meet informally with students but is not expected to teach traditional courses.
Eligibility – Must be a US citizen aged under 40.
Deadline – July 15, 2013 – which isn’t long but as it’s for already published novels, it should be fine, but you do have to send your application by post, so hurry hurry!

Notes – The award has been running every year since 2001. Its purpose is to support and encourage promising young fiction writers.

Opportunity type – International Student Playscript Competition
Theme – Any playscript as long as it is new, or an adaptation.
Word count – No restriction.
Organiser/publisher – IdeasTap.
Reward – £500, constructive feedback, mentoring from an established playwright, play workshopped at National Student Drama Festival 2014.
Eligibility – Must be aged 16-25, from anywhere in the world. The word ‘student’ is in the competition title, but I couldn’t find anything in the rules specifying that you must be a student. You must however be a member of IdeasTap to enter, but that just involves creating a free profile on their site.
Deadline – October 11, 2013.

Notes – The competition is in its 39th year, and is promoted on the BBC website.

Opportunity type – Short stories for an anthology.
Theme – Science fiction (see site for fuller specification).
Word count – 4,000 words.
Organiser/publisher – Diabolic Publications LLC.
Reward – US$.03/word, payable upon electronic publication. Plus, one copy of the edition in which the work appears when edition is published as a paper copy. Reprints: US$.01/word, payable upon print publication. Plus, one copy of the edition in which the work appears when edition is published as a paper copy.
Eligibility – Not specified.
Deadline – September 1, 2013.
