We Need YOUR Help!

by limebirdwriters

Hello there,

Aren’t you looking lovely today? Is that a new haircut..new top? Ok, enough of the sweet talk, down to business. So as you might have guessed from the title, we need your help. Pretty please?

So, the main point of this post is that we would like Limebird to be the best that it can be, so we would like your opinion. Even if you’ve been perusing through the Limebird posts for months or if you’ve only stumbled upon it today, every little helps.

What we are looking for is the answers to these questions, if you have a few spare minutes.

1)      Are the posts often enough or would you like less/more? ( we currently do one post a day, two max if something comes up)

2)      What types of posts would you like to see more of? So fiction/non-fiction posts, grammar, SEO/traffic advice, everyday rants etc. What would you like to see?

3)      Is the site easy to use? If you wanted to find a specific post or by a specific Limebird Writer would you be able to do that?

4)      Do you like the layout? Would the posts work better in a different order. Is it too cluttered? Etc.

5)      Is there anything else that you would like to see on Limebird that isn’t already there?

Also, please do leave any other comments, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for taking the time out to read this. If you do it… I will give you the option of a virtual hug, virtual hi 5, umm a nice picture drawn on a post it note… orrrrr if you live in the UK – Gingerbread men/muffins/cookies… any baked goods you like that I can make (collection only.. 😛 )

Thanking you kindly,

B and the Limebird Team x

PS – I’m having some difficulty trying to figure out where to put the forum on the site so people notice it. It’s currently along the top bar and there is a link on the right hand side. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

  1. I like the one post a day, and I think with the number of Limebirders we have posting once a day is doable.

It might be fun to make a Theme day once a week, or a couple of days of the week if you have enough topics. Such as Technical Tuesday where you post something that is related to the technical side of blogging. Or Thoughtful Thursday when we post rants or musings.

Okay, now for the gimmes–I will take a baker’s dozen of gingerbread men, please, lightly frosted. 🙂

    • Hi Kate,

Thanks for your input! Ohh I like that idea, then also we get a bit of structure going. *starts jotting things down in a notebook*

Haha, seriously if you lived nearby I would totally do that, I love baking. However, I think they would get a little squidged in the mail! 😦

      • Now That is an awesome idea! As you increase your writers, maybe go to two posts a day, but I like having time to sit and read the post and all the comments – much more than two posts a day and I won’t have time to read them all. Themed days of the week sounds pretty cool actually, so we don’t get stuck into any certain position within the group. Everyone gets to branch out.
        Really good idea, limebirdkate!

      • Hi Neeks,
Hmm, I think two posts a day might be a bit much. I think lots of posts might get missed and I like each writer to get a day to themselves 🙂 Yeah definitely like that idea, ohh exciting!

        Thanks for commenting.

  2. Hmmm:

1: For me the frequency of posts is about right: enough to look forward to, but not so many as to be swamped.

2: Depends a bit on the composition of your audience. There’s no doubt a lot of indie writers could do with help using English, so those posts are always useful, same with traffic advice. The everyday rants are fine, but when I get an email notification of a new post, I get the first 2/3 lines of the post in that email, and what those lines say is what makes me click on the link and read more. So if those first couple of lines grab me, then I’ll always read the post.

3 and 4: Can’t think of anything I’d like to see changed to the layout. There’s a lot going on here and there will always be different ways to jig things about; right now I think it’s as good as it can be. Overall, the best thing is the “Limebirds” icon; this theme you created is, in my opinion, very strong. It’s clear, instantly familiar and easily recognisable. It works, please don’t change it.

5: Yes, I’d like to see huge praise and big plugs for my two novels (sorry, couldn’t resist that!)

    • Hi Chris,

Thanks for commenting, it’s really appreciated. Yes, that is a good point, and with regards to everyday rants – we don’t really do that at the moment, so it could be something for the future.

Thank you, I can’t really take credit for that as it was my colleague that designed it, but I do really like it! So don’t worry, it won’t be changing any time soon.

Haha, ok, send some links my way and I’ll tweet them! 🙂

      • Right then, I’m going to go to Twitter and look for each of you to connect, so when you get a follow from @chrisjames282, that’ll be me 🙂 Btw, since I’m abroad and can’t collect the cookies, I’ve just scoffed an entire packet of Marks & Spencer chocolate digestives in your honour (!) (and feel a bit sick now, to be honest)

      • You can find us all here -https://twitter.com/#!/limebirdwriters/limebird-writers/members 🙂

Also kudos on the M and S biscuits!

  3. All right, here goes.
    1. Post frequency seems OK to me. I’m a quality-over-quantity person.
    2. I want to see more stories about Edinburgh. Seriously, I’m rather fond of rants. A good rant is so satisfying.
    3. It could be easier to find some things. For example, I never knew you wrote those stories about Edinburgh until I clicked the tag cloud out of curiosity. Some sort of index might help, one that you can access from every page.
    4. The layout seems fine to me, except it is a little annoying to have to scroll all the way down to find the kind of stuff you normally see in the sidebar, though I don’t know how to fix that without increasing the clutter. As it is, the layout seems informal and pleasant, like a magazine. A fun magazine, not one of those boring humorless ones about politics.
    5. More photos?

I would gladly take my payment in baked goods, but sadly, I can’t collect them in person. Twitter kisses and/or eternal gratitude would be an acceptable substitute.

    • Hi M,

Thanks for your input! Well, LimebirdLorna actually lives in Edinburgh, so maybe we could get her to put some posts up. Orrrr, if you’re hankering for some now, you can check out her personal blog – http://ginlemonade.wordpress.com/ there are many posts about the lovely city.

Hmm, yes that is a tricky one. We have the tag cloud at the bottom and the search bar on the top (which I would like to be bigger) but I can’t seem to be able to make it bigger. What do you mean by index? Do you have one on your site?
Ah yes, more photos would be great. However, the only difficulty is that due to the user set up, I’m the only one who has permission to post photos. I’ve tried to see if there is a way of doing this, but there isn’t. It’s very annoying. 😦

What stuff do you mean that would normally be in the sidebar. Like the calendar, tag cloud etc? Haha, thanks!

*eternal gratitude* Hmm, maybe I could try and get you twitter kisses from that person? I’m particularly good at that!

      • Oh Beth. You are too much. You’re the twitter-kissing bandit. I am working on that situation myself, but I’ll let you know if I need any help. 😀

I was slightly kidding about Edinburgh, but I love anything Scottish so post away.

By “index” I mean something like the categories that I have in my sidebar on my site. So you can just click on “writing: photos” and get a list of all my posts about photos. Would help if, for example, somebody wanted to read everything you wrote about travel.

      • Haha, I know! Well, let me know, I have a 100% success rate!

I’ve added categories now and an archive bit of the posts. Hopefully people will be able to find the posts a bit easier now.
I did like the award banners, however I do think it’s better with them in their own separate section. I’ve got the tag cloud at the bottom, and I don’t think people have to scroll down too far now. I don’t want everything on the right otherwise it’ll be a bit too much. Hopefully this is a bit better!

    • Hello ExiledStar, yep I’m based in Edinburgh! Thanks for the link-back, Beth, and I FB-ed you about a new post idea!

  4. 1. Frequency is fine 🙂 I don’t mind more than once a day, or going a day or two without anything, but once a day is good as well.

    2. I like the posts I read now, it’s always something new/different.

    3. Yep site is easy, and I’m able to get to specific Limers.

    4. Doesn’t seem too cluttered, I’ve never been lost on the site. With the frequency of posts/ multiple authors I think it makes sense the way you all have it now with the multiple columns.

    5. Y’all birds are awesome and I can’t think of a thing I’d have you add. You seem to have a good cross section of writing. I guess the only thing possibly missing would be screenwriting but that is kind of niche I suppose. Since I’ve been out of school I’ve been missing screenwriting talk and it’s driving me crazy but I suppose I could always bug my hubby with that 😀

I’m pretty bummed I’m not in the UK at this moment because I’d love some cookies! I guess I’ll take a virtual hug 😀 Keep up the limeyness because I love it!

    • Hi Laura,

Thank you so much for answering the q’s! Well, what a glowing review! Hehe. Also, that you’ve been with us since the very beginning, which is lovely.

Hmm yes, the only problem with that is that we don’t actually have any screenwriters on the team which is a shame. 😦 However, I’d be more than happy to chat about it in the forum!

Aww sorry, just like I said to Kate, they might get a bit squished in the mail! 😦

      Thanks again love! *virtual hug*

      • Y’alls is welcome 😀 hehe

You need to go find a screenwriter. Maybe Quentin Tarantino, I think he might be free to be a limebird 😀 Maybe I”ll post a script in the forum, I get paranoid about stuff like that but… I could give it a whirl!

      • Haha, yeah I’ll erm.. get a letter written up!

Yes, I’ve read it. It’s awesome, you’ve got nothing to worry about!

  5. 1. About once a day or so is perfect. It’s not too much to be overwhelming and frequent enough so there is always something new.
    2. Variety is good. This also gives the post authors some freedom to write about what is relevant to them and I think that is part of what makes the posts so engaging.
    3. Yes, but I didn’t know about Edinburgh until Exiled Star mentioned it. Now I’m curious.
    4. I think the layout is fine as is. As is, I’m able to read and find interesting posts. However, I agree with Exiled Star, that the stuff on the bottom is usually on the right of most blogs. I often don’t scroll down on this page and miss what’s there. It might make sense to swap the stuff on the right with the stuff on the bottom or to create a new tab on the menu bar called Awards, freeing up space so the stuff on the bottom can go to the right.
    5. It might be nice to see an occasional writing prompt. I also enjoyed reading your Christmas songs (from the Julia’s place prompt) and your 100 word short stories.

A virtual hug and/or smile will do =)

    • I kind of like the award banners. They’re cheery. They brighten up the otherwise minimalist theme of the blog. But perhaps there could be room for at least a small list of categories without displacing too much other stuff?

    • Hey,

      Thank you for commenting!

Haha, well I wrote it a long time ago when I went to Edinburgh, it was great fun. I hope you enjoy reading them.
Well, I’ve been thinking about putting the awards in their own tab for a while, so maybe now is the time to do it! What I’ve done instead is just limited the amount of posts on the front page, so you don’t have to scroll down very far. 🙂 Is that any better? Ah yes, I definitely think that I’ll be trying to do some more of those. I also really enjoy One Minute Writer. Thanks for reminding me!
*virtual hug and smile* Thanks again.

  6. Once a day is okay, but at times can be a bit much if my schedule is hairy (which is frequently) because I tend to miss some posts, or have to gloss over. But that’s my problem. 🙂

I do like the theme idea. Have set days a week for certain topics. Or devote entire weeks to a certain topic and all the posters need to contribute to that one.

Other than that, the site is great and I love checking in. 🙂

    • Hi Kathi,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. That’s shame that you’ve missed posts 😦 but obviously I’ll let you off as you’re busy! 😛
Yes, I’m definitely warming towards the idea, should be fun! Thank you and we do appreciate you checking in!

  7. I like the tweets and anything to do with promoting creative writing and writers is a good thing. :0)

  8. Hi there
    1. One a day works perfectly
    2. SEO/traffic advice ones are really useful for me (grammar less so as I have it coming out of my ears on social research surveys and I write creatively, so I keep to my POV). I really like how different limebirders add different elements of their personality to their posts and enjoy the diverse mix of perspectives (essentially keep doing what you’re doing but all useful prompts well-received)
    3. The site is easy to use, but I think it would be helpful to have an archive to previous posts in date order on the RHS if possible for easy access.
I think you could give the forum greater stand-out – the links are clear, but it might help to make it more of a feature and sell it a bit more with links and a ‘what are we currently talking about’ on the main-page – also to perhaps use it to continue discussions started on blog posts
    4. Just the archive point for greater stand-out
    5. Maybe a more links to technical pages on other sites? (e.g. if we’ve had a post of show not tell, link into explanations; if we have a post of apostrophe’s, link into a rules etc. so we build up a writer’s tool kit as we go along).

For my reward I’ve just had a bag of jelly babies so I’m on enough of a sugar-high so instead could you add my twitter name @SallyPanayiotou and my blog address http://sallypanayiotou.wordpress.com/ to my limebirds profile please (probably should have done this originally!)?

    • Ha-ha “I have grammar coming out of my ears” – yes, well why did you just write “apostrophe’s” then you daft cow! (As I spotted my own mistake immediately it becomes void!)

    • Howdy,

Fab, well don’t forget you can always email me with any SEO related Q’s!

Hmm, I’ll look into that. I think with the template, it doesn’t come with one of those but I shall have a little investigation. What’s a RHS? Can’t say I’ve heard of that before… Probably me being stupid.

Yeah that is a good idea, definitely have to start doing that more.

Ah, no there isn’t a ‘Home’ link, but if you click on the logo, you go back to the homepage 🙂

Can’t say I’m a massive fan of jelly babies, so you may keep them to yourself! 😛 Maybe if we have a London Limebird meet up, I can bring baked goods. Well your twitter name was already there, but I have added blog! 🙂

PS – I can’t believe you added an apostrophe in a plural noun. *rolls eyes* haha!

      • Sorry – Right Hand Side – nothing fancy!

      • Oh and when I said “should have done this originally” – I meant I should have done it by putting it in the bio I sent you rather than you should have done it, just realised that could come across the wrong way – ha-ha can you tell I’m slightly distracted by Eri’s new crawling (aka vanishing baby) trick!

  9. Oh and another one on site navigation – there isn’t a link to the home page on the top tabs (or if there is I’m being very blind!) – if I click into ‘about’, for example, I always struggle to find my way back to the blog posts and often have to leave the page and come back in afresh

    • Ah getchaa! I have added this now, what do you think?

Haha, how rude of you! Aww bless her. Careful you don’t do what my mum did. She left me in a room once, without realising how far I could crawl. Came back in the room and I was nomming on the coal in the fireplace! Haha!

  10. I like your site, it’s easy to navigate, and I can find the posts by category. I think one post a day is amazing, I would visit even if there were one post every other day. I like the idea of themes, for example: Mondays are rants, Wednesdays are writer posts, etc. I do that on my site so that if people only like one type of post (I do a post every Saturday about shoes and purses, what can I say, I’m obsessed, and I do hold ‘Book Showers’ every Monday) then they know which day it’ll be on.

    Hope that helps!

    Nancy 🙂
    Chick Dick Mysteries

  11. I like the once a day — I can just about keep up with that 😉 And I also like the idea of a topic day or week. The variety of posts from the different members is definitely a plus already. In one blog I can find multiple views and ideas!

I don’t know if you all have customized this particular theme, but some of the comments by others about not seeing things at the bottom could be addressed by using a different WordPress theme. Or maybe you could move some of the widgets to the sidebar.

But I like the layout, and I haven’t had any trouble finding older posts — especially after I figured out that’s what the calendar widget does. Admittedly, it might be more obvious if it said something like ” Archives Calendar!”

    • Hi JM,

Thank you! Haha, well I’m glad you like that. 🙂 Hmm, yes topic day or week is looking quite popular, definitely need to get thinking.
No, unfortunately with this theme, I haven’t actually added the ones that are at the bottom. I haven’t put them as widgets, they come up unless I put something in their place ( tags, comments, admin) etc. Do you think it’s better now as it is? I’ve moved some stuff around.

Fab! Well, I’ve now added an Archive bit on the top right, so that might help! 🙂

      • I think it’s looking good. If you didn’t set up the stuff at the bottom, then the items down there are probably the default widgets for this theme. But I think having the archives widget and category widget up near the top of the right column will help visitors who might miss things at the bottom.

Like any creative endeavor, you’ll probably be playing with it through time! I’m on my third theme, and I just did the upgrade so I could use some different fonts. But I think the whole “CSS” options are beyond me — getting into computer coding to ultra-personalize my blog is way beyond me!

      • Yeah I think they might be, which is a bit frustrating, but not much I can do about that! 😦

Yes, I went through about 4 before I settled on this one, which I definitely like the best. Ah, I haven’t gone for the upgrade option… do you think it’s worth it?

  12. Beth, while the need to understand your readers is really important, indeed I must do the same, the methods used are also important. Feedback can be sought either as qualitative or quantitative (thank God for spell-checkers!) and each serves a different purpose.

What is happening is that you are getting qualitative feedback. Extremely valuable but almost impossible to measure. Without measurable data you will never have a reliable picture. (And surveys, statistics and reliable findings is another very long topic!)

Go here http://polldaddy.com/ and here http://polldaddy.com/pricing/ to see that running surveys can be done easily and, more important, the price is right!

    Hope this helps? Paul

    • Hi Paul,

      Thanks for your comment!

Ah yes, I am familar with PollDaddy and also other services that do proper data collation. I have a simple account for adding polls into the posts etc. However, I’m not sure if we’re really big enough to take the step up to quantitative data, simply because I don’t have the money to do proper surveys (I know there are some free ones) but I don’t know if we have enough data to collate. Maybe at some point in the future when we are a little bigger, I will take this a bit further, so thank you! 🙂

  13. I think one post a day works well, I’d never be able to keep up if there were many more! I like the idea of topics, maybe a series of something on a Tuesday or something, then when everyone runs out of things to say on that topic it could change to a new series!

I don’t think the site is cluttered or difficult to use, the only problem I’ve ever had is knowing which tags/categories to use! I don’t know if some sort of index might be useful, I went through every post and wrote down all of the titles and a sentence of what they’re about so that I know what’s already been said, but that might just be me being a bit OCD!

And as I’m in the UK I’ll take the gingerbread men thanks, pass them on to Stu on Friday and I’ll pick them up after beavers! (I want to put a wink here but I don’t know how to get one! Yet another example of my technological failings!)

    • Thanks for commenting Ster! 🙂 Ah yeah, OK definite general idea is that the topics is a good idea. Woop!

Well, I wouldn’t panic too much, because I generally add them in anyway, so don’t worry about it too much! Oh wow, that’s dedicated. That must have been a bit boring. Don’t worry, you’re in good company with the OCD thing. haha!

OK, Gingerbread men is fine, however I don’t think I’ll have time to bake them this week. Might have to do it for next week. A wink is just ; and ) pushed together!

    • Great prep, Ster – my first post turned out to be a complete rip-off of a post Neeks had written the month before (I hadn’t read it, so not deliberate!) so I ended up putting it on my own blog and writing a different one for limebirds!

  14. 1) Are the posts often enough or would you like less/more? ( we currently do one post a day, two max if something comes up)
I think you have a good amount of posts. If you ever want to do more, I don’t see why you shouldn’t do more though. Sometimes I post many a day. Some days I go without being able to post anything.

    2) What types of posts would you like to see more of? So fiction/non-fiction posts, grammar, SEO/traffic advice, everyday rants etc. What would you like to see?
    EVERYTHING.

    3) Is the site easy to use? If you wanted to find a specific post or by a specific Limebird Writer would you be able to do that?
I don’t know, I haven’t tried. There is a search widget you can add if you think you need one.

    4) Do you like the layout? Would the posts work better in a different order. Is it too cluttered? Etc.
The layout works for your content.

    5) Is there anything else that you would like to see on Limebird that isn’t already there?
Limebird is awesome the way it is. I think it might be interesting to hear about day-to-day life things every now and then from each writer. Oops, maybe that should have gone in 2.

    6) Forum
There’s really no where else to put it. The only thing you might be able to do is choose a layout with a darker font for the page links and sidebars.

    I love you guys. 🙂

    • Haha, everything.. OK I’ll work on that. Yes, there is a search widget on the site already, on the top right. 🙂

Aww thanks, I dunno how much other people would want to hear day to day stuff. Might be a bit boring! lol

Ah yeah, we did used to have a darker layout, but it was so hard to read! I went through about 4 layouts before I settled on this one.

      Love you too Amber!

  15. So, I think you’ve been changing things as I read this, so I went back and checked things out again.

The only real complaint I had was that if I liked a post but wanted to go back later to check out a link (like in the SEO one you put out or some of the blogs that awards were passed to), it was hard to find them a day or two later. However, I think the archive thinggy takes care of that problem. You might want to consider making it a drop-down menu, because you’ll eventually have it taking up a lot of space.

    I like the frequency.

It might be nice to have the posts categorized a bit (e.g. SEO/traffic, writing basics, etc.), but you guys are pretty good about linking to related content, so it’s not entirely necessary.

I actually haven’t gotten to the forum yet – I have a sort of forum-phobia because I really don’t get them.

Now, as for the cookies… I’m a bit far away for that, but you’ve given me lots of advice and feedback, so how about we call it square?

BTW, I think I might write a post about opossums 😉

    • Great thanks Shannon. Great, I’m glad that that problem is sorted out. Yeah, I think I might change that when it gets a bit later in the year, when it gets too much. Thanks for your advice! 🙂

Haha, well I’m sure you would like our forum! It’s very friendly and easy to use. What scares you about them? It’s just like the comments section on here, but with more discussion and more people!

Deal! I’ll look forward to the opossums post!

      • I dunno. I’ve never liked them. I guess I find them unwieldy. Here in the comments, everything is all in a row, indented to show layers of discussion. Then in a forum there’s LOTS of stuff and then substuff, then comments on those. ACK!

I have enough trouble keeping track of these. I think it’s just too much. Still, you Limebirds are a friendly bunch – maybe I’ll check it out when I’ve got a nice calm period.

  16. 4) I like the layout, but it’s easier for the eye to track across a shorter line of text.

    • Hi Kathy,

Thanks for chiming in. Do you mean in the posts, like width or lengthways? 🙂

      • I mean width, across the page, sideways, margin to margin. I picked that fact up when I was teaching; I think it’s one reason many textbooks are printed with two columns to the page. I don’t know whether it’s a problem for the mature eye, but I’ve noticed it lately myself when I read blogs. (Of course, that could be because I’ve become lazy about reading, as I have with other things.)

I look forward to the opossum post, too.

  17. I have found this site interesting, helpful, and informative. I think one post a day is enough, but with multiple writers, I don’t know if that is reasonable. Can you just draw straws? I also liked your posts about drawing traffic to a site. Thanks!

  18. I think the site layout and content is excellent – this is one of my preferred blog stops. But there has been a bizarre lack of random kitten pictures as of late…

  19. More than one post a day gets too overwhelming, so please keep it on once a day.

Variety in content is wonderful. I love the posts about improving writing and working towards publication.

The look of your site is fine by me–simple, easy to read. Keeping the posts short directing us to more info should we want it is a great idea in my book.

Thanks for doing what you do and doing it so well! 🙂

  20. This goes back to Limebird Beth’s last response on my earlier post — no more room to reply! Someone who’s comfortable with coding would get the most out of the WordPress upgrade. I looked at the “CSS” part of it, and it’s too complex for me. And right now I don’t have the time to really study it. But I like the wider choice of fonts and the fact that it now makes my blog “ad free.”

I never saw the ads, but then I noticed in my site stats that some people had clicked on links in my blog that I hadn’t put there. Those turned out to be the occasional ads that WordPress will put on the totally free version. You also get more storage room for graphics, which do add up over time, and you can post videos if you’d like.

Is there anyone out there who’s better at the “CSS” options of the upgrade?

    • Haha sorry JM! Hmm, yes I like the idea of the different fonts and I know a bit of CSS, so I might benefit from it. I’m not sure if I could stump up the money though! I also haven’t seen ads before, which is strange.

      Thanks for the info!

      • I haven’t seen very many ads, maybe only a handful on all the blogs I’ve looked at over the last 3 months. So WordPress is very good about limiting them like they say they do. But it’s nice to give people a break from them. I try not to even look at them on things like Facebook. There’s overkill! But that’s a personal rant of mine 😛
